Bolivian constitutional referendum
An Aymara woman looks at her empty ballot before deciding her vote at a voting center during the constitution referendum in Jesus de Machaca, Bolivia. Bolivians are voting in a referendum on whether to amend the constitution so that President Evo Morales can run in 2019 for a fourth consecutive term.
A constitutional referendum will be held in Bolivia on 21 February 2016. Voters will be asked to vote 'No' or 'Yes' for constitutional amendments removing restrictions on the number of presidential terms.
Background
Article 168 of the 2009 constitution allows these officeholders to put themselves forward for re-election only once, limiting the number of terms to two. The referendum was made legal by a combined session of the Plurinational Legislative Assembly on 26 September 2015, by a vote of 112 to 41. Law 757, which convenes the February referendum, was passed 113 to 43, and was promulgated on 5 November 2015.
